Ignasi Aballí to present architectural 'Correction' at Spanish Pavilion for 2022 Venice Biennale

Ignasi Aballí will represent Spain at the 59th Venice Biennale with a site-specific project addressing the pavilion's architecture and Venice's tourism pressures. His exhibition features two components: an architectural intervention titled 'Correction' inside the Spanish Pavilion, and a city-wide project called 'Venice' involving six artist's books distributed across the city. The architectural piece aims to realign the Spanish Pavilion with neighboring Belgian and Dutch pavilions, addressing its rotated orientation. The six books adapt previous works into book format, available at six Venetian locations. Aballí questions the national pavilion structure, calling it anachronistic in today's globalized art world where national distinctions blur. He participated previously in the 52nd edition curated by Robert Storr in 2007. The artist cites Antoni Tàpies and Joan Brossa as Spanish influences. The Biennale runs from April 23 to November 27, 2022, with Cecilia Alemani curating the main exhibition. Aballí views the Biennale as a crucial global meeting point offering maximum visibility and participation in contemporary art debates. He considers the Spanish Pavilion representation a significant career recognition.
