Iginio De Luca's Nietzschean Light Installation in Roman Hypogeum

exhibition · 2026-04-24

In the underground space beneath the historic Necci café in Rome's Pigneto district, artists Iginio De Luca and Liliana Moro present a two-part installation curated by Donatella Giordano and Agathe Jaubourg as part of the exhibition cycle 'Sottoforma'. De Luca's work, 'Chi lotta dentro di te' (He Who Fights Inside You), projects a Morse code light sequence spelling Nietzsche's aphorism 146 from 'Beyond Good and Evil' into a three-meter-deep well. Moro's sound piece 'Rumore bianco' (White Noise, 2022) references Don DeLillo's 1985 novel. The site, a pozzolana quarry from the 1st century BCE later used as a WWII air-raid shelter, evokes the historical 'Underground Railroad' as metaphorically reimagined by Colson Whitehead. Previous 'Sottoforma' interventions included Eva Marisaldi, Enrico Serotti, and Luca Vitone's olfactory sculpture 'Il gladiolo fulminato. Omaggio a Filippo De Pisis'. The final stage, opening May 12 for three days, features José Angelino and Elena Bellantoni with sound works 'Mosquitos' and 'Lucciole'.
