IED Students Create Artribune Magazine Covers with Fragile Surface Project

publication · 2026-04-27

IED students and alumni have produced the cover of Artribune Magazine through the Fragile Surface project, which explores contemporary themes such as the blurring boundaries between artistic disciplines, the intersection of art and technology, the relationship between humans and nature, and the overlap of real and virtual. The project involves works from courses in Visual Arts, Computer Generated Animation, Graphic Design, Photography, Illustration and Animation, Sound Design, and Video Design. The first cover features the short film 'Luce d’abissi' (2022) by P. Lippi, A. Magnotta, E. Polo, D. Zema, and J. Tonetti, a thesis project in CG Animation and Sound Design. The filmmakers describe their inspiration from Michelangelo's Creation of Adam and Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon, aiming to pay homage to European and Italian art. Technical challenges included achieving a painted effect in compositing, simulating a water droplet with Houdini, and realistic underwater hair simulation using grooming techniques. The team divided roles based on individual skills, with some members taking on unfamiliar tasks. The project was a collaborative effort from the start, with music composed by Alessandro Magnotta and mixed by Jacopo Tonetti.
