IED Roma and ATAC Transform Metro Train into Artwork for Sustainability

The Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) Rome and ATAC, Rome's public transport agency, have launched TerraNuova, a project turning a metro train into a mobile artwork promoting sustainable mobility. Thirteen female students from IED Rome's Master in Arts Management, under the creative direction of visual artist Brando Corradini, designed graphic wraps for the train cars. The vibrant colors are inspired by Rome's urban beauty. The project also involved students from Rome's art high schools Ripetta, Caravaggio, and Argan through work-study programs. Laura Negrini, director of IED Rome, stated that the initiative addresses urban overheating by imagining streets filled with trees instead of cars. The project was presented in December 2023 at an event featuring a talk with Francesco Dobrovich (coordinator of the Master in Arts Management), Brando Corradini, and art director Matteo Modena, engaging over 100 people. A podcast by Loquis accompanies the project. TerraNuova is part of ART STOP, a 2017 initiative by Nufactory and ATAC, winner of the Culture in Movimento 2023-2024 call by Rome's Department of Cultural Activities. ATAC's general director Alberto Zorzan emphasized that the metro is inherently green, moving hundreds of millions of people annually without emissions.
