ICP-Bard MFA 2016 Exhibition Explores Identity Through Photography at Baxter Street Camera Club
From July 1 to July 30, 2016, the ICP-Bard MFA class of 2016 showcased "The Ties That Bind" at the Baxter Street Camera Club in New York. This exhibition featured ten artists hailing from eight different countries, each delving into the concept of identity through the mediums of photography and video. Verónica Puche presented two images centered on her great uncle Guillermo, portraying a "second existence." Martha Naranjo Sandoval's work, "How this has to be told" (2016), includes a childhood photograph that offers conflicting interpretations, challenging the notion of truth in photography. Matthew Papa's "Self-portrait with Jerome" (2015) captures male intimacy, gaining significance following the Orlando shooting. The exhibition, located at 126 Baxter Street between Hester and Canal streets, explored themes of memory, self-construction, and family narratives, addressing both fragmentation and continuity.
