Iconic Liz Taylor-Richard Burton kiss becomes NFT

digital · 2026-04-27

A historic photograph of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton kissing on a motorboat in Ischia, taken by Marcello Geppetti on June 18, 1962, has been transformed into a high-resolution video NFT. The footage was created using sophisticated morphing techniques applied to the original negatives. The NFT will be auctioned starting June 18, 2022, on ItaliaNFT, the first marketplace dedicated to digital assets of Made in Italy. The image, ranked by the New York Post as the top among the '7 most legendary Paparazzi photos,' reportedly earned Geppetti about 30 million lire (approximately €400,000 today). Achille Minerva, CEO and founder of ItaliaNFT, stated that the NFT represents a historic moment for both the NFT world and Italian cultural heritage. Geppetti, born in Rieti in 1933, was a key paparazzo who inspired Federico Fellini's character in 'La Dolce Vita.' His photographs have appeared in Time, Life, Vogue, and Donna Karan, and are exhibited worldwide.
