Icoma's Foldable Tatamel Bike Wins Monocle Design Award

The Tatamel Bike, a collapsible electric scooter by Tokyo-based startup Icoma, has been named Smartest Mobility Solution at the Monocle Design Awards 2026. Designed by founder Takamitsu Ikoma, the scooter folds to suitcase size and can be stored indoors. It has a top speed of 45 km/h and a 30 km range, with a battery that doubles as a portable power source. Priced at ¥498,000 (€2,700), about 100 units have been sold since production began in 2024. Icoma, founded in 2021, employs seven people and is working to scale up. Ikoma, a former Takara Tomy toy designer, is also collaborating with Toyota on a self-balancing transporter.
