ICA LA exhibition explores language, identity, and power through 25 international artists

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Running until September 4, the exhibition 'The Condition of Being Addressable' is showcased at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. Curated by Marcelle Joseph and Legacy Russell, the exhibit features 25 artists who delve into the connections between language, identity, and power, drawing inspiration from Judith Butler's theories. Notable works include 'Immolation' (1972) by Judy Chicago and Jessica Vaughn's 'After Willis (rubbed, used and moved) #012' (2022). Additionally, photography and video installations, such as Tiona Nekkia McClodden's 'The Backlight 5.10.2016' (2016) and Anaïs Duplan's 'The Lovers Are the Audience Who Watch' (2019), explore the influence of technology on representation. Miatta Kawinzi's 'sweat/tears/sea' (2017) narratively addresses the effects of state policies on marginalized communities.
