Iatã Cannabrava's Peripheral Visions at Museu da Cidade de São Paulo
Photographer Iatã Cannabrava presents 'Uma outra cidade, um outro tempo' at the Museu da Cidade de São Paulo, curated by Rubens Fernandes Junior. The exhibition features approximately 80 analog photographs taken with medium-format negatives between 1997 and 2007, documenting peripheral neighborhoods from Capão Redondo to Itaquera in São Paulo, as well as Belém, Caracas, Lima, La Paz, Buenos Aires, and Montevideo. Cannabrava's decade-long project aimed to capture daily community life through intimate engagement with residents, moving away from traditional black-and-white depictions of poverty. Diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2008, the photographer shifted focus to his archives, maintaining a connection to the people he met. Curator Rubens Fernandes Junior notes the images' enduring relevance, highlighting how territories remain centers of cultural and political resistance. Time is perceptible through details like furniture, clothing, gestures, advertisements, and automobiles. The show runs until October 23, with free admission from Tuesday to Sunday, 9 AM to 5 PM, at Rua Roberto Simonsen, 136B in São Paulo.
