I Think Art Is: 60 Protagonists Share Their Views on Art in Video Project

digital · 2026-05-05

Lara Nicoli and Carlo Carfagni have created "I Think Art Is," a 24-minute video featuring around 60 figures from the art world—artists, critics, writers, gallerists, and patrons—each offering a brief reflection on the meaning of art. The project originated as a spin-off from a Rai3 experimental format in 2016, using clips shot with tablets and smartphones. Nicoli initially adopted a journalistic "vox populi" approach but later blended it with performative elements, positioning herself as a neutral, robotic witness open to interaction. Participants include Michelangelo Pistoletto, Giosetta Fioroni, Fabio Sargentini, Luigi Ontani, Emmanuele Emanuele, Giorgio De Finis, Veronica Montanino, Michele Welke, Gianfranco Baruchello, Pablo Echaurren, and Pietro Fortuna. The video was recently presented at the Macro museum in Rome. An accompanying installation by Artis GmgProgettoCultura invites visitors to add their own thoughts. The project is a work in progress, with plans for an interactive website that aims to become a collective online artwork.
