i/thee's Radical Softness: Architecture That Listens to Mud, Algae, and Wind
Experimental design studio i/thee practices 'cosentience,' giving agency to materials like mud, algae, paper, wood, and weather across public installations, shelters, and pavilions. Key projects include Puddle Pavilion (2025) in Bondurant, Iowa—a free-form canopy of algae-based bio-resin cast directly on the ground, now hovering above Mud Creek. The Dining Room (2024) at Lake Petocka uses rammed earth walls eroded to reveal benches and tables. ReEmber Playland in Amboy, California, is a recyclable adult playland for Teva's ReEmber collection. Agg Hab (2020) in Texas, with Roundhouse Platform, casts papier-mâché into ground holes as eco-dwellings. Peak-A-Boo (2022) at the Woodstock historic site in Bethel, New York, is a wood-laminate performance pavilion. Ghost House (2018) in Morongo Valley, California, used canvas sheets hardened by wind to record climatic forces. The studio's approach—pouring, eroding, laminating—treats design as participation, not command.
