I IN wraps Human Made store in handcrafted Korean celadon tiles
I IN, a Tokyo-based studio, has unveiled a new outlet for Nigo's Human Made brand within Seoul's Lotte Mall Jamsil, featuring handcrafted Korean celadon tiles. The design reflects Human Made's ethos, 'the future is in the past', utilizing a material that has been valued in Korea for centuries. Spanning 216 square meters, the store showcases pale-green and blue tiles arranged in random clusters, contrasting with a light parquet wood floor. Each tile exhibits unique color variations and crackle patterns, contributing to what I IN co-founder Hiromu Yuyama describes as a 'powerful presence.' The studio combined the organic elements of the tiles and wood with an industrial-style ceiling, reminiscent of factory lighting. Playful touches include glass-encased shipping containers, a wall adorned with Human Made's heart logo crafted from red tiles, and handcrafted tanuki sculptures, nodding to the nearby Lotte World amusement park. Nigo established Human Made in 2010 and is also recognized for founding A Bathing Ape. This project posed a 'strong sense of responsibility and pressure' for I IN while enabling the studio to enhance the brand's visual identity. Photography credits go to Yongjoon Choi.
