I IN completes minimalist Lulla House in Kamakura

architecture-design · 2026-05-04

Tokyo studio I IN has completed Lulla House, a private residence and showroom for fashion designer Azusa Yamato on the beachfront in Kamakura, Japan. The three-storey building features a sand-coloured plaster facade, rope-strung balustrades, and views of Sagami Bay and Mount Fuji. Founded in 2018 by Yohei Terui and Hiromu Yuyama, both alumni of Curiosity, I IN is known for commercial interiors for Cartier, Tiffany, and Blue Bottle. Lulla House is their first residential project, designed as a home and showroom for Yamato's brand Lulla, which sells furniture and homeware. The ground floor retains surfboards from its previous life as a windsurfing school. The second floor opens to the bay via a sliding titanium wall. Custom sand-sourced tiles in dusty pink with acid yellow grout are a signature feature. A white plaster spiral staircase anchors the three floors. The third floor includes an open wardrobe and a bathroom with a bathtub facing the bay. The exterior plaster matches beach sand, making the house appear to rise from the sand. Yamato describes the house as a place to feel 'gentleness, grace, and inner strength.'
