Hyperallergic's In Memoriam: Valie Export, Mary Lovelace O'Neal, and Others
In the newest Hyperallergic's In Memoriam column, seven important figures from the art world are honored. Valie Export (1940–2026), the Austrian feminist performance and film artist, was a pioneer, co-founding the Austrian Filmmakers Cooperative in 1968 and writing the influential 1972 'Women's Art: A Manifesto.' She later taught in Cologne and created the Valie Export Centre in Linz. Mary Lovelace O'Neal (1942–2026), known for her impactful Lampblack paintings and her work in Civil Rights, is also remembered. F. John Sierra (1942–2026), a muralist and co-founder of Arte Américas in 1987, had a day named after him on July 17. Noel Galea Bason (1955–2026) was acclaimed for his coin and monument designs, with a retrospective set for 2024 in Valletta. Jamshid MirFenderesky (1947–2026) opened the Fenderesky Gallery in Belfast in 1984, and Peter Paone (1936–2026) recently wrapped up a solo show at the Michener Art Museum. Italian sculptor Remo Salvadori (1947–2026) exhibited at both the Venice Biennale and Documenta.
