Hwang Sok-yong's 'Princesse Bari' Reissued in French, Blending Shamanism and Modern History

publication · 2026-05-24

French publisher Zulma has reissued Hwang Sok-yong's 2007 novel 'Princesse Bari' in a new translation. The 83-year-old South Korean author, a perennial Nobel candidate, weaves Korean shamanic myth with contemporary history. The novel follows its heroine from North Korea through China to London, addressing famine, dictatorship, and migration. Hwang, who was exiled during the Korean War, forcibly drafted into the Vietnam War, and imprisoned for visiting North Korea, draws on his own experiences. The reissue highlights Korea's literary depth beyond Nobel laureate Han Kang.
