Huntington to Stage First Major Retrospective of Ceramic Artist Doyle Lane

In San Marino, California, the Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens will showcase “Doyle Lane: Master of Clay,” marking the first significant museum retrospective dedicated to the Los Angeles ceramic artist Doyle Lane (1923–2002). Set to open on September 13, 2026, and continuing until February 22, 2027, the exhibition will display over 100 pieces crafted from the 1950s to the 1980s, including both small vessels and large architectural works. The exhibition aims to explore Lane's innovative contributions to ceramics in mid-20th-century California, particularly his expertise in glazes, especially his complex red hues that transition from orange to deep crimson, often highlighted by black edges from firing. Lane's acceptance of glaze chemistry's unpredictability, including bubbles and burn marks, enhances the aesthetic of his creations. This retrospective represents the most comprehensive showcase of Lane's work, emphasizing his importance in American studio ceramics.
