Huni Kuin Artists' Movement Opens Exhibition at Casa de Cultura do Parque

exhibition · 2026-04-23

The Movimento dos Artistas Huni Kuin (MAHKU) opens the exhibition 'MAHKU – Cantos de imagens' at Casa de Cultura do Parque in São Paulo on July 2. The show presents 11 paintings and a large installation by artist Kássia Borges, which will be assembled with the public during the opening. The exhibition stems from the group's research, transposing the cultural milestone of huni meka chants—understood as instruments of mediation between visible and invisible worlds—into visual arts. Founded in 2012 in Jordão, Acre, MAHKU continues the research of its founder, Ibã Huni Kuin, and his son Bane, who in 2009 began transforming these chants into images. The collective currently includes Ibã, Kássia Borges, Pedro Maná, Cleiber Bane, and Acelino Tuin. The Huni Kuin people number around 14,000 individuals in Acre and Peru. Co-curated by anthropologist Daniel Dinato and Ibã Huni Kuin, the exhibition seeks to highlight the personal quality of artistic manifestations, presenting different versions of the chants. Dinato notes that while the mythical and ritual foundation of the works is collective, each artist transforms the huni meka chant in a specific way, maintaining internal autonomy. The exhibition runs until September 18, with free admission requiring proof of vaccination. Concurrently, the venue hosts other exhibitions as part of its II Ciclo Expositivo 2022, including Rodrigo Bivar's 'Breve' and Teresa Viana's 'Feltragens'.
