Hungarian Curators Reflect on Post-1989 Institutional Evolution and Independent Practice

publication · 2026-04-19

Prior to 1989, independent curatorial endeavors in Hungary encountered numerous constraints, but the 1990s brought new possibilities. Lívia Páldi, the chief curator at Műcsarnok/Kunsthalle Budapest, played a pivotal role in establishing the Institute of Contemporary Art in Dunaújváros. The League of Non-Profit Art Spaces (LIGA), which received backing from Pro Helvetia, comprised six institutions, including Bartók 32 Gallery. In 2009, Eszter Lázár initiated the Art Theory Program at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts. Beata Hock curated the exhibition Agents & Provocateurs, showcasing over 30 international artists. Adèle Eisenstein organized Donumenta 2010–Ungarn in Regensburg, featuring artists like Attila Csörgi. János Szoboszlai highlighted private sector critiques regarding Hungary’s institutional inefficiencies. The ICA-D faced financial challenges in 2010, gathering over 1500 signatures for support.
