Hugh Broughton Architects and James Lambert Redesign London Underground Toilets

architecture-design · 2026-05-22

Westminster City Council has reopened refurbished public toilets at Piccadilly Circus and Green Park Underground Stations, designed by Hugh Broughton Architects with artwork by James Lambert. The twin openings are part of a program to upgrade eight public toilets across Westminster. At Piccadilly Circus, the redesign brings together previously separated men's and women's facilities, with pink structural columns echoing Lambert's artwork. Lambert's illustrations feature motifs from the area's entertainment history, including dot-matrix patterns and pixel forms. At Green Park, the scheme rebalances gender provision and includes a wheelchair-accessible toilet. Lambert's artwork there incorporates references to local landmarks, including lions, jewelry motifs, and daffodils. Both sites feature 'Westminster Blue' tiles, gold-colored cubicles, and comply with Part T of the Building Regulations. The project team includes FM Conway, Harley Haddow, the Contemporary Art Society Consultancy, M&M Moran, H&E Smith, and Digital Ceramics.
