Hudinilson Jr.'s Xerox Art and Body Politics at Galeria Jaqueline Martins
Hudinilson Jr.'s irreverent trajectory, marked by the collapse of the subject and radical performances, is on view at Galeria Jaqueline Martins until September 6, 2019. The exhibition occupies 600 square meters and includes early canvas paintings from the 1970s, revealing his sophisticated poetic vigor. A pioneer of Xerox art in Brazil, his work often explored the simultaneity of thought and visuality, famously exemplified by a 1981 photocopied image of his penis on a large outdoor billboard near Ibirapuera Park. This act challenged exhibition hierarchies and the work's locational power. His 1979 group 3Nós3, with artists Rafael França and Mário Ramiro, intervened in São Paulo through playful urban reappropriations like bagging public monuments. Throughout the 1980s, his art claimed the street through graffiti, influenced by mentor Alex Vallauri. Posthumously, his work reached Art Basel in Switzerland in June, avoiding the art market's repetitive fair circuit during his lifetime. The show is curated by gallery owner Jaqueline Martins.
