Hubo Studio Designs Child-Scaled City for Redhill Early Learning Centre in Johannesburg

architecture-design · 2026-07-29

Hubo Studio has completed the Redhill Early Learning Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa, a 2,641 m² kindergarten that reimagines the school as a child-scaled city. The design, led by architects Asher Marcus and Michelle Smith, draws inspiration from the Reggio Emilia educational philosophy, studied by the studio in Reggio Emilia, Italy. The centre adapts Johannesburg's energy to the sensory and developmental needs of young children, with architecture as an active participant in learning. The project, completed in 2024, involved collaboration with Redhill School, Joseph Gerassi, and Sue Pilkington-Williams. Key contributors include mosaic artist Usha Seejarim, playground designer PlayOn, and joinery by Innovation Factory. Photographs by Elsa Young Photography and Iwan Baan document the space.
