Hu Anyan on Writing, Humor, and the 'Amateur Writer' Label

publication · 2026-04-20

In an interview with ArtReview Asia held in Chengdu, Chinese author Hu Anyan reflected on his writing journey. His debut book, 'I Deliver Parcels in Beijing,' which was published in Chinese in 2023, attracted attention following a viral web journal from 2020 that chronicled his experiences during a nightshift in logistics. The English translation is set to be published in 2025 by Allen Lane and Astra Publishing House. After securing a book deal, Hu relocated to Chengdu in 2021, having previously worked 19 different jobs throughout China. He favors nonfiction for its basis in personal experience and appreciates the humor found in contradictions. Hu is involved with the Heilan forum, writes publicly, and has revised his book to enhance objectivity and address biases in earlier chapters.
