House TN by 1-1 Architects in Rural Japan

architecture-design · 2026-04-28

1-1 Architects completed House TN in 2024, a 71 m² residence in an urbanization control area. The project responds to rapid land subdivision and speculative housing developments that have densified the neighborhood, worsening daylight and ventilation. Lead architects Yuki Kamiya, Yui Goto, and Kazuya Shibata designed the house to counter the trend of maximizing building coverage and subdividing interiors into nLDK units. The surrounding context features generous single-story farmhouses, but recent sales of ready-built homes have led to overcrowded, inflexible layouts. The house aims to preserve openness and adaptability. Structural design was by Workshop, contractor was Hirata Construction Co. Ltd. Products from LIXIL, Miratap, and toolbox were used. Photographs by Takashi Uemura.
