Hou Zichao's A Sun Mountain Opens at SPURS Gallery, Beijing

exhibition · 2026-07-28

Hou Zichao's fourth solo exhibition with SPURS Gallery, titled A Sun Mountain, opens on July 4, 2026, and runs through August 16, 2026. The exhibition presents over a dozen recent paintings across the gallery's three spaces: Gallery I, II & III. Hou's practice revolves around landscape, but the scenes are not based on actual locations; they are fragments from travels, social media, childhood memories, and untraceable images. The works explore the process of painting formation, using spray guns, rollers, stencils, and brushstrokes to layer and reveal images. Texts, graphics, and directional signs contribute to an alternative reading of the landscape. The exhibition title suggests a persistent imaginary where eruption and dormancy, day and night coexist. Hou Zichao (b. 1988, Shanxi, China) earned his BA from Central Saint Martins (2012) and MA from Chelsea College of Art and Design (2013), and lives and works in Beijing. His recent solo shows include Fruit Hunting (SPURS, 2024), Fallen Lush Racing Share (Tara Downs, New York, 2023), and Practice Land (Cans Project, Taipei, 2023). Group exhibitions include Light Chase at Gravity Art Museum (Beijing, 2025), Here, Where, There? at Almine Rech (Shanghai, 2024), and Bordercrossing at Yuz Museum (Shanghai, 2023). His works are held in collections such as Long Museum (Shanghai), Yuz Museum (Shanghai), Song Art Museum (Beijing), He Art Museum (Foshan), and Aurora Museum (Shanghai).
