Hou Hanru Discusses 'Cities on the Move' at Afterall Talk
On 21 May 2015, curator Hou Hanru participated in the ninth Exhibition Histories talk at Whitechapel Gallery, organized by Afterall. In conversation with Lucy Steeds, he discussed 'Cities on the Move' (1997–2000), co-curated with Hans Ulrich Obrist. The talk focused on the relationship between art and cities, referencing related projects like 'Parisien(ne)s' (1997) at Camden Arts Centre and 'Hong Kong, etc.' (1997) for the 2nd Johannesburg Biennale. Initially developed for Secession's 100th anniversary in Vienna, 'Cities on the Move' traveled to PS1 New York, CAPC Bordeaux, Louisiana Humlebæk, Hayward Gallery London, Bangkok, and Kiasma Helsinki. Hou Hanru described it as 'a touring institution rather than a touring exhibition'. The series is a collaboration with Whitechapel Gallery and part of the Exhibition Histories project led by Afterall with the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College.
