Hotel Esencia: A Constant Amid Riviera Maya's Overtourism

On Mexico's Riviera Maya, Hotel Esencia remains a secluded luxury retreat despite the region's rampant overdevelopment. Owner Kevin Wendle, who began searching for property in Tulum 20 years ago, acquired the 12-hectare estate in 2014—a former home of an Italian duchess. Over 18 months, he transformed it into a hotel with casitas overlooking the beach or nestled in the jungle. The property is decorated with handmade rugs, mid-century chairs, and pieces by Studio Giancarlo Valle and Ceramic Suro. Wendle has made incremental changes—adding a gym, spa, Beefbar restaurant, and more casitas—but the essence remains unchanged. Artistic director Juan Carlos Gutiérrez, formerly a graphic designer at Chanel in New York, oversees the aesthetic, emphasizing handmade and custom-made details. The hotel attracts returning guests and those in the know, offering a quiet alternative to the crowded beaches of Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum. Wendle, who has no investors, is committed to preserving the property's unique character. The hotel is a 90-minute drive from Cancún Airport, with easy access to cenotes, nature reserves, and a secluded lagoon with manatees.
