Hotel du Tasso: Torquato Tasso's Summer Home Reborn as Hotel in Sorrento

The summer residence of Italian poet Torquato Tasso in Sorrento has been transformed into a hotel, reopening on May 22, 2026. The project, led by Neapolitan architect Antonio Girardi of Antonio Girardi Architect, treats the building's history as a living design material. The hotel features 33 rooms, a wellness area in ancient caves, and interiors that blend contemporary art with classic elements. Tasso, born in Sorrento on March 11, 1544, sought refuge there in the summer of 1577 with his sister Cornelia, in a famous anecdote where he pretended to be a messenger announcing his own death. The design includes historic vaults highlighted with a blue profile, a hall with Venetian glass chandeliers and a black-and-white marble checkerboard floor, and rooms with raffia inserts, Carrara marble, and Brazilian Blue stone. Fabrics from Dedar, Alessandro Bini, and Pierre Frey are used. The wellness area preserves the original stone niches. Girardi's previous works include DOM Hotel and Palazzo Dama in Rome and A-Ma-Re in Capri.
