Hospital of Emotions pop-up transforms defunct LA hospital into art experience
The Hospital of Emotions, a pop-up exhibition curated by Yaara Sachs, has taken over 80 rooms in the now-defunct St Vincent Medical Center in Los Angeles, scheduled for renovation into a behavioural health centre. Sachs, who runs House of Art and Dreams, held an open call and selected around 70 artists, including street artists, set designers, fashion stylists, and students. Each artist received $4,000 for their project and up to $10,000 for materials. The exhibition is divided into departments dedicated to emotional states such as joy, hope, fear, and anger, aiming to provide catharsis for visitors. Notable installations include Cosmodernism's (Kamil Cazpiga) grid of TV screens showing magnified paint drops, Guy "Dioz" Bloom's Techno Trolls depicting a hospital scene, Sachs's IV stations with dyed saline, Pablo Thomas's room covered in realistic family snapshots, and Napo's life-sized bird-headed figures carrying birdhouses. The exhibition runs until 31 July.
