Hong Kong student suicides rise 10% despite government intervention

Between 2024 and 2025, Hong Kong witnessed a 10% rise in student suicides, increasing from 28 to 31 suspected incidents, despite government initiatives. This year, the government is expanding its three-tier system, which enhances school capabilities and utilizes community resources along with Hospital Authority assistance, to include primary schools. However, the initiative prioritizes early identification and treatment of symptoms rather than tackling underlying issues. The Jockey Club Centre for Suicide Research highlights the significant roles of family and school, noting that academic pressure is prevalent among suicide cases. Supported by the Quality Education Fund and an advisory committee, the centre has established 10 principles for creating a 'Well-being First' school, advocating for a shift away from competition as the main success metric.
