Hong Kong selects Kingsley Ng and Angel Hui for 2026 Venice Biennale, marking first dual-artist presentation
In a shift from its previous practice of featuring a single artist, Hong Kong will send two representatives to the 61st Venice Biennale in 2026. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Hong Kong Arts Development Council, and Hong Kong Museum of Art revealed on December 11 that installation and media artist Kingsley Ng, alongside emerging artist Angel Hui, has been selected. Ng's work focuses on cultural memory and social themes through immersive light installations, while Hui employs traditional gongbi painting techniques on modern items such as toilet paper and porcelain. This marks the first time the Hong Kong Museum of Art will co-curate the city's pavilion, succeeding M+, which has overseen Hong Kong's participation since 2013. A selection panel of seven, including curator Johnson Chang and Mori Art Museum senior advisor Fumio Nanjo, reviewed over 200 candidates. Both artists hail from Hong Kong, with Hui recognized for her 2022 installation 'Make a Wish' at HKMoA. The Hong Kong Arts Development Council has not provided reasons for the transition from M+ to HKMoA as the curating body.
