Hong Kong's Spring Workshop Announces Closure After Five-Year Program

institutional · 2026-04-20

Mimi Brown, director of Hong Kong's non-profit Spring Workshop, revealed the venue will shut down at the end of 2017. The space opened in 2012 on the third floor of a factory building in Wong Chuk Hang district, establishing itself as a vibrant alternative venue with an internationalist, cross-disciplinary program. Brown explained she had always planned a five-year timeframe to maintain focus and impetus. Spring Workshop hosted events, concerts, screenings, exhibitions, and residencies involving artists like Heman Chong, Haegue Yang, Walid Raad, and Elmgreen & Dragset. Brown, who serves on the Asia Art Archive board and advises Para/Site Art Space, will retain the physical space but shift her attention toward international social and political issues. The announcement was reported by the South China Morning Post on 28 February 2017.
