Honduras: 16 Killed in Two Separate Attacks, Including Six Police Officers

On Thursday, gunmen executed two distinct assaults along the Honduran coast, resulting in the deaths of at least 16 individuals, including six police officers. The first attack took place at a plantation in Trujillo, a municipality in northern Honduras, where National Police spokesman Edgardo Barahona reported that at least 10 workers were shot dead. This resource-abundant area has been plagued by agrarian disputes for decades. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights has previously implemented precautionary measures for activists facing threats and intimidation while advocating for environmental and land rights. The 2024 murder of environmental advocate Juan Lopez underscored the risks associated with defending natural resources in this heavily militarized region. Honduras consistently ranks among the most perilous nations for environmentalists, with five fatalities in 2024 and 18 in 2023, as noted by Global Witness. Recently, three individuals were apprehended for orchestrating Lopez's murder, marking a rare instance of justice in a nation characterized by high impunity.
