HomeWorks 7: Resilience and Archive in Beirut's Art Scene
The seventh edition of HomeWorks, organized by Ashkal Alwan, took place in Beirut from November 11 to 24, 2015, despite a double bombing in the southern suburbs on the opening night. The forum featured exhibitions, performances, and discussions. Notable performances included Rabih Mroué's 'Ode to Joy,' which addressed the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre, and Zan Yamashita's 'Daikoushin / A Grand March,' a meditation on catastrophe. Films by Lamia Joreige ('And the living is easy') and Akram Zaatari ('Twenty-Eight Nights and a Poem') explored themes of departure, archive, and memory. The exhibition 'On Water, Rosemary and Mercury' at Beirut Art Center, curated by Christine Tohme, included Stéphanie Saadé's 'A Map of Good Memories,' a gold-leaf floor map of intimate memories. The Aïshti Foundation, designed by David Adjaye, opened on October 25, 2015, with inaugural exhibition 'New Skin' curated by Massimiliano Gioni, featuring works from Etel Adnan to Akram Zaatari.
