Holzrausch transforms Frankfurt penthouse into a roof garden
Munich-based architecture firm Holzrausch has completed a two-storey penthouse extension in Frankfurt, designed as a 'roof garden in the middle of the city'. The project was commissioned by Stylepark founder Robert Volhard and his wife Patricia, who lived in the building for 18 years before moving up when the roof needed replacement. The 400-square-metre, three-storey home features open-plan living spaces, a kitchen, dining area, and a full-height opening leading to a roof terrace. The Wilhelminian-era building's mansard roof was replaced with a vertical-walled extension described as a 'contemporary crown'. The interior palette includes solid wood, terrazzo, and brushed stainless steel, influenced by Studio Mumbai. A blue-carpeted staircase and a sculptural spiral staircase connect the levels. The upper floor houses a home gym and office. Holzrausch, founded in 1998 by Sven Petzold and Tobias Petri, also recently referenced Luis Barragán for a Mallorcan holiday home.
