Hollywood's 'Screenmaxxing' Trend Expands with InfinityVision and HDR by Barco Projection Systems

At CinemaCon, Disney unveiled InfinityVision, a new certification for premium large-format auditoriums, which encompasses over 300 screens worldwide. This initiative aims to rival Imax for significant releases, including Avengers: Doomsday and Dune 3. The film industry is increasingly turning to premium large-format (PLF) screens to draw in viewers and support elevated ticket prices, leading to alternatives such as Dolby and HDR by Barco. The latter, found in venues like Alamo Drafthouse and Regal Cinemas, enhances film clarity in titles such as The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and The Mummy. Although not revolutionary, it does enhance typical projections, particularly in darker films. This trend seeks to set the cinema experience apart from home viewing, despite challenges like limited Imax availability and consumer uncertainty regarding PLF brands.
