Hollaway Studio completes Westview, a coastal house in Dungeness
Hollaway Studio has completed Westview, a new house in Dungeness, Kent, on the edge of the Dungeness Estate. The project reimagines an existing cottage within the UK's only desert landscape, a shingle beach designated as a Special Protection Area. The architects retained the original building's silhouette and footprint but reoriented the interior to maximize views across the western horizon. Materiality includes charred and treated timber with a white coating, corrugated metal, Corten steel, and a salt-and-pepper concrete floor that echoes the shingle beach. Surrounding outbuildings were integrated into the design, creating a humble, sturdy façade resistant to coastal elements. Hollaway Studio has previous experience in the area with Pobble House and is also converting a historic railway carriage into a dwelling called Windwhistle. Founder Guy Hollaway stated the house feels 'both protective and open,' grounded in vernacular but contemporary.
