Hole: Temporary Art Peep Show in Bologna's Adiacenze Window

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The exhibition 'Hole. Temporary art peep show' at Adiacenze in Bologna, Italy, concluded on June 1, 2021. Conceived by the curatorial team of Adiacenze and graphic design studio Tatanka (creators of Artribune Magazine covers), in collaboration with independent curator Andrea Tinterri, founder of art magazine La Foresta, the project launched on April 28, coinciding with the Out Of Order festival—a diffuse contemporary art event organized by Bologna-based associations (Adiacenze, Dev, Nelumbo Open, Parsec, Tank, Elastico, Laboratorio l’Isola) protesting the neglect of non-profit cultural spaces during the pandemic. The initiative aimed to continue contemporary artistic inquiry despite pandemic restrictions. Adiacenze's window was obscured, with six small holes fitted with fisheye lenses allowing viewers to peek at artworks using their eyes or smartphone cameras. Twenty-four artists participated, each given identical boxes to create installations that changed weekly in groups of six. Artists interpreted the voyeuristic condition variously: sharing private obsessions, enclosing creative processes, or realizing long-held ideas. Works reflected on the present, nostalgia, and resilience. The partial concealment drew audiences to rediscover decoding visual signs, reactivating the vital exchange between viewer and artwork.
