HKS and SWA Complete Halperin Park Over Dallas Interstate
Halperin Park, a newly established cap park in Dallas, has been unveiled, bridging the historic Oak Cliff neighborhood that was separated by Interstate-35E since the 1950s. Designed by HKS and SWA, the park features a structural deck stretching between Ewing and Marsalis Avenues. Highlights include a Great Lawn with a glulam performance shell, a multipurpose pavilion with a walkable roof and water feature, sculptural landforms crafted from glass fiber reinforced concrete reflecting local geology, and a promenade at 12th Street. Play areas utilize Robinia wood, while shaded seating and fountains offer relief from the Texas heat. An analysis from the University of North Texas at Dallas predicts that phase one could draw over two million visitors annually and generate $1 billion within five years. This initiative, launched in 2017, is a collaboration between the Southern Gateway Public Green Foundation, the city of Dallas, and the Texas Department of Transportation. Phase two aims to expand the deck to five acres towards Lancaster and Marsalis Avenues. Todd Strawn from SWA and Russell Crader from HKS highlighted the importance of community reconnection and local pride. Other capped parks in Dallas include Klyde Warren Park and plans for Dealey Plaza.
