HIWAR Exhibition in Amman Features International Artists and Khalid Shoman Collection

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Darat al Funun, a Jordanian non-profit, launched the HIWAR exhibition on 8 November as part of its 25th anniversary celebrations. The show presents works by fourteen artists from the Arab world, Africa, Asia, and Latin America who participated in a month-long residency in Amman. Curated by Adriano Pedrosa, the exhibition uniquely combines new pieces created during the residency with selections from The Khalid Shoman Collection, featuring established artists like Emily Jacir, Mona Hatoum, and Walid Raad. Participants included Turkish artist Asli Çavuşoğlu, South African Thabiso Sekgala, and Brazilian Jonathas de Andrade. The residency program distinguished itself by encouraging artists to engage with both their Amman surroundings and their hometowns. Two accompanying events are scheduled: a screening of South American short films selected by critic Yazan Ashqar on 10 December, and a talk with Palestinian literary critic Dr. Faisal Darraj on 17 December about the International Prize for Arabic Fiction. Darat al Funun organized the residency to mark a quarter-century of supporting the arts.
