architecture-design · 2026-05-27

Warren and Mahoney has completed the Hiwa Recreation Centre at the University of Auckland, a 22,280 m² facility opened in 2024. The project, curated by Miwa Negoro, addresses the challenges of a dense student precinct and sloping site on the urban campus, which is integrated into Auckland's city center. The city's topography includes rainforest and 53 inactive volcanic centers. The design team includes Blair Johnston, David Mahon, and others from Warren and Mahoney, with MJMA team members Ted Watson, Chris Wanless, and Tim Belanger. Cultural advisor Haumi contributed to the project. Construction was by Hawkins, with facade engineering by Mott MacDonald and quantity surveying by RLB. Photographs by Scott Norsworthy.
