Historic Parisian gallery Bernheim-Jeune closes after 150 years

institutional · 2026-05-04

After 150 years of operation, the historic avant-garde gallery Galerie Bernheim-Jeune in Paris has officially closed, as announced on its website. Founded in 1863 by Alexandre Bernheim, the gallery was instrumental in showcasing Realists and Impressionists, featuring renowned artists like Bonnard, Matisse, and Modigliani. It notably hosted the first Vincent van Gogh retrospective in 1901 and the inaugural Futurist exhibition in Paris in 1912. According to Guy-Patrice Dauberville, who directed the gallery until April 2018, the decision made by the advisory committee was not influenced by market conditions. The gallery had previously shut down during WWII, resulting in the confiscation of numerous artworks. Dauberville will continue his research on Bonnard and Renoir alongside his daughter Floriane.
