Hispanic Society Treasures on Display at Madrid's Prado Museum
The Museo del Prado in Madrid is hosting a major exhibition of over 200 works from the Hispanic Society of America, the largest museum of Spanish art outside Spain. The show, running until September 10, 2017, includes masterpieces by El Greco, Velázquez, and Goya, as well as Paleolithic artifacts, Celtic jewelry, Roman statues, Islamic art, Baroque polychrome sculptures, maps, ceramics, and rare books. The Hispanic Society, founded in 1904 by philanthropist Archer Milton Huntington, closed its New York building in 2019 for renovation. The exhibition is sponsored by BBVA with €625,000. Prado director Miguel Falomir inaugurated the show, and Hispanic Society director Michael Codding highlighted the need for visibility and funding. The exhibition also features a video by Italian photographer Francesco Jodice.
