Hilton London Bankside unveils world's first vegan hotel suite by Bompas & Parr

architecture-design · 2026-05-04

The Hilton London Bankside has introduced the world's first vegan hotel suite, designed by the multidisciplinary studio Bompas & Parr. The suite, which opened in 2019, is entirely free of animal-derived materials, replacing leather, feathers, and wool with innovative plant-based alternatives. For bedding, guests find pillows filled with organic wheat, millet, or bamboo fibers. The sofa upholstery and room key card are made from Piñatex, a leather-like material derived from pineapple cellulose fibers. Bompas & Parr chose pineapple for its evocative power, noting its first appearance in London at the nearby Borough Market. The headboard decorations were created by artist Emily Potter. All cleaning products are cruelty-free, and only vegan beauty products, beverages, and snacks are provided. The suite marks a milestone in the growing intersection of design and vegan philosophy, following the 2018 Milan Design Week exhibition "Vegan Design – Or the Art of Reduction" curated by Maria Cristina Didero, which featured Israeli designer Erez Nevi Pana. That show raised questions about the untapped potential of animal-free materials in design. In the UK, the PETA Vegan Homeware Awards annually recognize animal-friendly objects. The Hilton suite, while a unique offering within a traditional hotel, signals a potential expansion of veganism into architecture and hospitality design.
