Hildigunnur Birgisdóttir to present Icelandic pavilion at 60th Venice Biennale

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Iceland will be represented by Hildigunnur Birgisdóttir at the 60th Venice Biennale, taking place in the Arsenale from April 20 to November 24. Her showcase, titled 'That’s A Very Large Number – A Commerzbau,' presents items from commercial frameworks in an unexpected arrangement. The artist draws inspiration from Kurt Schwitters' 'Merz' concept, which she first encountered 25 years ago through her art history instructor, Sigridur Candi. Additionally, she acknowledges the influence of Kristján Guðmundsson and a childhood exhibition by Miró. Birgisdóttir suggests visiting thermal swimming pools, the Kringlan shopping mall, and reading a book by Birgir Andrésson. She eagerly anticipates engaging with fellow artists and experiencing curator Adriano Pedrosa's main exhibition, 'Foreigners Everywhere,' highlighting the Biennale's significance for varied global viewpoints.
