publication · 2026-04-23

Hilda Hilst (1930–2004) will be the honoree of the 2018 Paraty International Literary Festival (FLIP), announced festival director Mauro Munhoz. The 2018 edition runs from July 25 to 29. Munhoz praised Hilst's provocative and inspiring literature, noting her innovative language and influence on contemporary Brazilian theater. A course on Hilst's life and work, taught by journalist Flávio Aquistapace, is being held at the Sesc Research and Training Center in São Paulo from January 9 to 30, 2026. The course focuses on four of her titles: 'Contos D’escárnio – Textos Grotescos', 'O Caderno Rosa de Lori Lamby', 'Cartas de um Sedutor', and 'Rútilo Nada'. Hilst, a São Paulo-born writer and poet, was known for her erotic works and received awards like the Anchieta and Jabuti. She died of ischemia on February 4, 2004. Her literary executor, Daniel Fuentes, launched the online store Obscena Lucidez to sell her books, translations, and CDs. A documentary about her life, 'Contato, Hilda Hilst Pede Contato', directed by Gabriela Greeb, is scheduled for release in September 2026.
