High Line Revives Billboard Art Series with Glenn Ligon

exhibition · 2026-04-26

After almost ten years, New York's High Line has brought back its Billboard Art series, commissioning large-scale pieces for a billboard located at 18th Street in Chelsea. This initiative, part of High Line Art, will showcase new artworks every two months. For the series' revival, Cecilia Alemani, who has served as director and chief curator since 2011, chose Glenn Ligon. His piece, "Untitled (America/Me)," will be displayed from September 3 to November 2024, featuring bold black X's obscuring much of the word "AMERICA" to comment on the relationship between individuals and their nation. The original series ran from 2010 to 2015 and included artists such as John Baldessari and Faith Ringgold. In 2019, Alemani also introduced the High Line Plinth.
