Het HEM: Amsterdam's Former Munitions Factory Reborn as Multidisciplinary Art Space

exhibition · 2026-05-04

In 2019, Het HEM opened its doors in Zaandam, close to Amsterdam, transforming a former munitions factory established in 1956. This 10,000-square-meter facility, located within the Hembrugterrein industrial zone, was responsible for producing artillery for both the Dutch military and NATO. Since 2017, it has been owned by Amerborgh International and maintains its industrial charm. Under the direction of Kim Tuin, the venue includes exhibition areas, lounges, a library, a café, a restaurant, a music bar, and artist studios. The initial exhibition, curated by Edson Sabajo and Guillaume Schmidt, explores themes of community and urban counterculture until September 1, 2019, featuring artists like Neo Matloga and Erik van Lieshout. A permanent installation by RAAAF, called 'Still Life,' reflects the site's history. The Boxing Clinic, led by Michele Aboro, will culminate in a Boxing Gala on August 31. The next chapter, curated by Nicolás Jaar, will take place from September 21 to December 21, 2019.
