Hesai unveils world's first color-capable lidar sensors for autonomous vehicles

Shanghai-based lidar manufacturer Hesai has developed the world's first color-capable light detection and ranging sensors, with its ETX model expected to launch in the second half of 2024. According to CEO David Li Yifan, the 6D full-color platform represents a fundamental innovation that enables detection of object coordinates, reflectivity, velocity, and color simultaneously. Deutsche Bank analysts note these sensors will significantly enhance vehicle sensing capabilities, particularly for identifying traffic lights and construction signs. Li emphasized this technology breakthrough comes amid intense competition in the global automotive industry's push toward driverless vehicles. While Hesai hasn't disclosed which automakers will receive the first batch, the company plans to reduce costs through expanded manufacturing capacity. The announcement was made during a media briefing on Friday, with Li stating the company prioritizes "zero-to-one innovative breakthroughs" rather than market hype.
