Hermitage Museum partners with MANN and Pompeii in four-year agreement

institutional · 2026-05-05

The National Archaeological Museum of Naples (MANN), the Superintendence of Pompeii, and the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg have signed a four-year collaboration agreement. The accord, announced by MANN director Paolo Giulierini, includes exchanges of research experiences and study internships, scientific conferences, seminars, and round tables. It also covers the use of innovative technologies for cultural heritage, interdisciplinary approaches to art and archaeology, scholarships, joint excavations, and co-organized exhibitions. Planned exhibitions include a Pompeii show in St. Petersburg in 2018, and three shows at MANN: Scythian gold, Russian vedutisti, and a major exhibition on Canova in 2019. The agreement was signed in St. Petersburg by Giulierini, Massimo Osanna (Superintendent of Pompeii), and Mikhail Piotrovsky (General Director of the Hermitage). Previous Hermitage partnerships in Italy, such as those in Ferrara and Venice, have not met expectations, but the involvement of strong Italian partners raises hopes for success.
