Hermione Carline, British Artist and Textile Designer, Dies at 74
Hermione Carline, a 74-year-old British artist and textile designer hailing from a prominent artistic lineage, has passed away. She was born in London and spent her childhood in Hampstead, where her family home, filled with antiquated books, furniture, and artworks from generations of Carlines, felt more like a museum than a residence, leaving her yearning for modernity. After completing her education at Hampstead School for Girls, she pursued fine art at Camberwell School of Art and obtained an MA in textile design from the Royal College of Art (1974–1979). Her professional journey began at Bodansky and Dickinson studio in 1979. In the early 1980s, she co-founded The Collection, creating fabric designs for renowned brands like Nicole Farhi, Dior, Ungaro, and Donna Karan. Married to Philip Hunter in 1981, they had three daughters. In 2004, she returned to oil painting, crafting a unique style characterized by color veils that evoke light, maintaining a balance between abstraction and representation. Her work was exhibited widely, including with Turps Art School and UNPRIMED Collective, and she collaborated on projects with Claridge's Hotel and Visto Images. In 2022, she participated in the exhibition 'Those Remarkable Carlines' at Burgh House, Hampstead, celebrating four generations of her family. She is survived by her husband Philip, daughters Madeleine, Josie, Isabel, and grandsons Freddie and Theo.
